KNIVES OUT ANALYSIS

This page is going to display the things that I observe about the movie as I'm adding the pictures to the plot runthrough on the other page.

My laptop's running low on battery so I'm going to make this as quick as I can, I'll be using dates to show my analysis for now until I have enough to arrange this to something more structured.

These first few scenes serve as our introduction to Knives Out, so this tells us what the important pieces of information we need are. The introductory scene shows the house (1), and shows the house's many eccentricities. It shows many statues and figures around the house (I didn't mention this in the summary, trying to stick to just the important info). Harlan is a murder mystery writer and his house really reflects that, not just the decor but the secret rooms and doors, like shown at (2). Not only that, but also how Fran calls out to him as she's coming upstairs to look for him. She's happily bringing him breakfast, smiling and laughing on her way. She doesn't mind doing this for him because she likes him. These things display Harlan's personality, even without him being present in the story... or at least without him being alive.

When we switch perspectives to Marta, the death of Harlan is still fresh in our minds, and so we can infer her sudden waking up is probably related to that. The following scene confirms that she is affected by this, while also introducing her personality. Saying that it's fine that her sister watches the show despite being bothered by it.
